Making the top starts with placing six links inside one closed link. This our step 1. To make it easier for you, I've colour coded each step, by using differently coloured links.
With this, the initial closure is done. Now you just start adding more rolls. You will have to repeat step 2 and then use step 3 to turn the corners.
Eventually you will come out with something like that. It should roughly cover the top of your head, so measure it accordingly. Don't worry if you make it too big, actually make sure there is plenty of room for hair&padding.

I have tried this 5 times now and I'm also following the instructions perfectly as far as i can tell but it always ends up as a pentagon with one side larger than the others.
Well depends on when and where you added an extra in the following layers. Relax, its not a problem and yes it does look like a pentagon.
Thank you for responding so quickly i thought it would take a while so i waited a bit. anyway, the mistake i seem to making is in the beginning not in the later layers. It seems the instructions are missing a step where we add an extra ring to turn the corners. because when i finish it's only has 5 sides instead of 6 like yours.
Not unlikely honestly, I will see about that and try to fix it.
